Drought Monitor update is issued once a week at 8:30 a.m. on Thursdays.
Drought conditions have worsened despite a damp weekend and over 1" rainfall in spots Monday. The rainfall deficit for the year has increased over more than 7" in Boston and over 7.5" in Worcester. In addition, the string of 90 degree days last week only dried things out further.
Most of Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire is currently in a MODERATE to SEVERE drought, exceptions are the Berkshires and Nantucket only. Lawrence has had its driest June and July on record!

New this week:
- SEVERE DROUGHT expands southward into northern Connecticut and Rhode Island and parts of southeastern Massachusetts
- Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard are now in a MODERATE DROUGHT
Do not expect improvements in the next week. Scattered Saturday storms will likely bring around 0.25” rainfall to southern New England with some spots receiving 0.5-0.75”. This is simply not enough to chip away at the shortage.
The rest of the week will feature dry conditions with the chance of a Wednesday night or late week shower.
