BOSTON — As kids returned to the classroom and people go back to work—the COVID numbers have also made a comeback. Boston area wastewater samples are showing increasing signs there could be another surge.
The wastewater tracker itself is a good predictor of what’s to come, and the latest data shows COVID is rapidly increasing in areas north and south of Boston.
Cities and towns north of the city 100% jump in the seven-day wastewater average according to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. The area south of Boston increased 56% within the last week.
Samples are taken a few times a week at the Deer Island Treatment Plant. COVID cases are rising the fastest in kids and teens between the ages of 10 and 19 years old, according to the Department of Public Health. However, it appears hospitalizations have plateaued since July. The department releases its COVID data every Thursday afternoon.
Experts have warned that a COVID surge could happen at the start of the school year, subside after a month, then pick up again during the holidays. They recommend getting a booster shot so people can protect themselves and their families.
