TSA: Expect rising travel times, costs this Thanksgiving season

BOSTON, Ma.--It’s Thanksgiving week and big crowds are expected to be flying in and out of Boston’s Logan Airport. Massport says more than a million people are expected to go through Logan over the holiday.

Flying out to Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving and you’ll have to get through the traffic to the airport first. TSA is expecting to be busier this year than last year-maybe even pre-pandemic levels. It’s why some travelers have already returned to Boston after celebrating Thanksgiving early.

“I’m trying to stay clear of the crowds and certainly managed to do that so I would imagine starting now would start to get a little more crazy,” says Aaron Couture.

An uptick in travelers isn’t the only thing affecting the holiday season so is inflation. According to money.com the average ticket price for domestic flights is $350 up 43% from last year. The average international ticket price is $800 up 41% from last year. One woman paid $1,000 for her trip to Ghana.

“I had to keep watch of like the prices because when I was looking it was really high, but on Veteran’s Day the price went down so I had to get it real quick,” says Emmanuella.

If you’re traveling this holiday season, Massport offers these tips: arrive 2 hours before your domestic flight-3 hours for international ones, make sure gifts are unwrapped, and check your airline for travel requirements. People that Boston 25 News talked to say they haven’t had any problems.

“Just took a few minutes to get through security, it wasn’t very bad at all,” says Couture.

“Most of the time it is like pretty smooth like just follow the rules and it is all good,” says Emmanuella.

And with this very busy holiday travel season, TSA asks everyone to be kind to all the workers and pack an extra suitcase filled with patience.
