Mother’s Day cards help support women in need at Boston shelter

BOSTON, Mass. — As we get ready to celebrate all the mom’s out there this weekend, one Boston organization is helping a lot of mothers in need, thanks in part to some beautiful artwork by Lillian Hunt.

Lillian, who is 66 years old, loves to draw and is really talented. “Lillian is quite an artist and has quite the eye,” said Janice Hayes-Cha. Hayes-Cha is a local artist and longtime volunteer at Women’s Lunch Place and collaborated with Lillian to create this year’s card for the shelter’s annual Mother’s Day Card Program, which is one of their biggest fundraisers of the year.

Women’s Lunch Place is a daytime shelter and advocacy center that serves more than 18-hundred women annually who are experiencing homelessness, hunger and poverty. It’s housed in the Church of the Covenant in the Back Bay. “Each one of these cards when purchased supports 5 healthy lunches at our shelter, so it is really an amazing way to spread the word about the work we do at Women’s Lunch Place and to view our services,” said Henry Morris, communications and marketing manager at Women’s Lunch Place.

Each card is a $25 donation. The goal of the program is to sell enough cards to fuel 40-thousand lunches for guests like Lillian — who first came to Women’s Lunch Place after a traumatic brain injury left her out of work and homeless. Through the program’s advocacy program, Lillian found a home and found more time for her art work. “She’s particularly talented in terms of color and you can see that in the card because Lillian really picked out those colors and she had some ideas around the darker tones and being able to make that art really jump,” said Hayes-Cha.

The Women’s Lunch Place relies solely on donations. Anyone interested in purchasing a card can do so in person at Blackstone’s of Beacon Hill and at the Charles River Speedway on Mother’s Day.
