Steamship Authority considering fare hike for ferry passengers ahead of 2023 travel

CAPE COD — In order to meet the high fuel costs, the Cape Cod Steamship Authority is considering increasing its rates on its Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket routes for 2023.

The Steamship Authority board will vote on the proposed rate adjustments at its second public meeting which will be held virtually on Monday.

For the ferries that service Martha’s Vineyard, one-way tickets for vehicles will increase by either $3 or $5 depending on the season, according to the Cape Cod Times.

The paper reported that the rate will increase by $10 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Vehicles over 20 feet wound see an 8% increase in fares and walk-on fares will increase by $.50 for adults.

For the ferries that service Nantucket, one-way tickets are expected to increase for vehicles by either $9 or $14 all depending on the season. The tickets will increase by $20 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during peak season, the newspaper reported.

In 2023, fuel costs are expected to increase by $5.6 million, a 69% hike, according to a presentation Friday by the Steamship Authority. This inflation bump and maintenance cost would leave the Steamship Authority with a net income after expenses of $1 million for 2023, according to the paper.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
