South Shore residents make last-minute preparations for storm

SCITUATE, Mass. — Mike Olen used sandbags, plywood and the glow from his SUV’s headlights to finish securing his garage door. He’s lived on Oceanside Dr. for 17 years and said a bad storm can bring three to five feet of storm surge into his home.

“It’s just a surge [expected Friday], not waves, so we’ll see how bad it is,” Olen said.

Wind is the biggest concern Friday, along with the possibility of flooding and expected heavy rainfall, according to the National Weather Service. Gusts of 50-60 mph will likely develop and lead to areas of wind damage and power outages. A coastal flood warning is in effect for portions of eastern, northeastern, and southeastern Massachusetts from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, the NWS said.

Ted Kent at the Watson Family Hardware Store in Scituate said residents spent Thursday stocking up on batteries, flashlights and gas cans for generators.

“It’s been really busy all day long,” Kent said. “But we’re pretty much used to it here in Scituate. We’re used to the fact that storms are coming and we know how to prepare for it.”

Jen Palmer lives near Peggotty Beach and stocked up on last minutes items at Village Market.

“We get flooding where we live and some of the spray from the ocean comes right into our living room so we’re a little worried about the high tides,” Palmer said. “We’re actually fine being stuck inside for the next few days now that we have food.”
