BRAINTREE, Mass. — It’s been 50 years since Title IX passed but one local youth group founded an organization that continues to push for equality in women’s sports by empowering girls through athletics.
A group of high school girls from Massachusetts started “Glam Girl,” the Global Local Athletic Movement, to create more opportunities for young women and girls to play sports and promote gender equality in schools, communities, and the world.
Glam Girl also extends to individual clubs at various schools in Massachusetts. Caroline Gelina is a member of the Glam Girl Club at Thayer Academy.
Moe Lind, Teagan Lind, Taryn Madsen, and Izzy Murphy, a group of student-athletes, started this organization and said they were inspired after a conversation with Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
“She said use your strengths to make an impact so we were like sports our passion,” said Moe Lind.
‘Glam Girl’ has taken Ginsburg’s advice to heart and gone into underreserved communities across the state, with kids who might not have enough exposure to sports and offered basketball camps for girl athletes. The ladies also stepped up by donating hundreds of items like sports bras, cleats, and other gear.
“It just shocked us because that is something that we wear every day when we are practicing and it is crazy to think that some people don’t have sports bras,” said Teagan Lind.
One of the goals of “Glam Girl” is to get more people to attend girls’ sporting games because they say girls are just as talented as male athletes.
We have a project called Presence is power where we try to advertise girls’ games to get more people there.” “We are putting in the same amount of work, we are doing the same thing so why should we not be as respected,” said Teagan Lind.
The group of girls also push for Title IX to be reinforced so that girls have just as nice workout facilities as men so they can also take their skills to the next level.
On Wednesday we recognize women all across the world as it marks International Women’s Day.
