Police: Man claiming to be Kennedy grandson arrested at Hyannis Port compound

HYANNIS PORT, Mass. — A New York man is under arrest and due in court Wednesday for allegedly trespassing at Ethel Kennedy’s home.

Barnstable Police say Hyannis Port security were familiar with a grey Toyota Scion with Florida plates that was found parked at Eugenia Fortes Beach around 10:30 Tuesday night. No one was inside the car.

According to police, a man identified as Anthony Putnam, 32, was then found in Ethel Kennedy’s driveway and graffiti was spray-painted on the driveway.

According to a police report, when officers asked what Putnam was doing, Putnam “looked up and said ‘I am family.’”

When police asked if he was Anthony Putnam, the report shows Putnam said, “Yes and I am (redacted) Kennedy’s grandson” and tried to explain that he had DNA proof.

Putnam told officers “I did this because they need to know the truth about me,” according to the report.

Police say he was wearing a “button type” shirt, “jogging suit” pants, and tennis shoes. Putnam is from Saratoga Springs, New York according to police.

The police report says Putnam has been seen in the area since last June, “claiming to be a Kennedy relative.”

According to police, Putnam went to the same compound on Thanksgiving and was “encountered by staff who asked him to leave and did not report the incident. Putnam left a box with that he claimed was DNA evidence that he was (redacted) Kennedy’s grandson.”

The car was eventually towed from the scene and police say they recovered two cans of gloss red spray paint.

Putman will be arraigned Wednesday in Barnstable District Court on charges of Injury to Real and Personal Property.

Police were not able to immediately say whether Ethel Kennedy was home at the time.
