‘Outrageous’: Trash piling up in Lawrence after residents forced to leave garbage at their curbs

LAWRENCE, Mass. — Trash is piling up on the streets of Lawrence because residents have been forced to leave their garbage at their curbs due to an ongoing issue with the vendor that oversees collection service for the city.

The owners of JRM Hauling and Recycling recently sold their business to Republic Services, a company that is facing issues with staffing and vehicles, according to Lawrence Mayor Brian A. DePena.

DePena says the uncollected trash will continue to sit out until at least Oct. 5, DePena said.

“I am fully aware of the ongoing challenges we are going through now with the delay on the uncollected trash in the city. I share your frustrations and concerns about this uncommon and outrageous situation,” DePena said in a statement. “We recently met with the owners of Republic Services, who have committed to collect all uncollected trash, yard waste, and recycling by next Wednesday.”

The situation has “dramatically impacted” Lawrence and a number of neighboring communities, DePena noted.
