Skiers, sledders excited over even meager Massachusetts snowfall

WELLESLEY, Mass. — By noon, the hill at Warren Park was scarred by sledders. Kaden Nucera, 11, was one of them.

“In December we got, like, no snow,” he said. “I’m glad that we have a little snow. I mean, snow is snow and I was excited when I woke up this morning and saw all this stuff.”

“All this stuff” really didn’t amount to much. Wellesley, like many communities, got a couple of inches of snow from Monday’s storm. But the meager coating was enough to draw out a number of winter sports enthusiasts.

“It’s not the worst,” said Peter Ferenc, 9.

Left unsaid by Peter — that this winter has been far from the best, if you’re into snow.

“This is the first time I have my snow gear on for the whole season,” said Elena Boiardi.

That’s something — considering March, the end of meteorological winter, is just six weeks away.

Over at the Westin Ski Track, Monday’s snow brought out many cross-country skiers, including members of Newton North High School’s Ski Team.

But this season’s limited snowfall kept everyone confined to a single loop.

“It’s kind of disappointing,” said Isabel Sloan. “Usually we have more snow and more parts can be open.”

“I’m glad it snowed yesterday,” said Sloan’s teammate, Julia Ma. “But usually we have all of that near the trees and the mountain. And I think climate change is really affecting our skiing length.”

Climate, period, is affecting operations at the Blue Hills Ski Area.

“It’s been a tough year,” said Ski Patroller Gerry Kaelblein. “It’s been a tough year for natural snow and snow-making.”

On the MLK holiday, the parking lots for the ski area were packed — though only two trails were open.

“They’ve done a lot with very little,” Kaelblein said. “There have been years in the past where we have not gotten Christmas week. This year we did get Christmas week.”

And then?

“And then we got a warm spell,” Kaelblein added.
