Canton family keeps late mother’s legacy alive through a charity in her name

CANTON, Mass. — A healthcare worker who died two years ago is still touching many lives. As we celebrate Black History Month, a Canton family is honoring their late mother, who continues to have a profound impact in the community.

Katia Taylor helps provide free, emergency transportation for cancer patients at Boston Medical Center. Her late mother, Anisah Taylor, was a patient at BMC before passing away two years ago at age 50 as a result of complications with leukemia.  “My mom was a wonderful woman. I think everyone would have something great to say about her and what she stood for,” Taylor said.

As a way to honor her mother, who was a longtime healthcare worker, Katia launched a non-profit called Anisah Cares. The charity is a way to keep her mom’s spirit alive. “She was just always willing to help, always complimenting people. Sometimes I’d have to say, ok mom, that’s enough.  It was just in her heart. She just always had a passion for just helping people and just being kind and loving,” Taylor said.

Anisah Cares provides all sorts of assistance to families in need, including a free, summer backpack giveaway in Roxbury, where 100 backpacks were filled with school supplies.  They also had a winter coat drive at the Boys and Girls Club in Dorchester.  The charity makes essential care packages for people transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing.  The packages include bedding, pillows, towels and hygiene products. And over Thanksgiving the charity put together and gave away 75 baskets with all the fixings to families in Mattapan. “She instilled in us to be wonderful, be great and to also give. When you have a little, give some. You can share some, so I’m hoping that she is proud. I am hoping,” Taylor said.

Taylor says her family plans to continue their mission to honor their mother and give back to the community with more events.
