Local deli building 200-foot Italian sub to help raise money for families in need

ARLINGTON, Mass. — D’Agostino’s is a neighborhood institution right on Mass Ave in Arlington.

Sam D’Agostino says his family deli and market is a place where they remember your order and your name.

”It’s funny sometimes we get compared to Cheers sometimes,” says D’Agostino. “You walk in and everyone knows your name. It’s part of an atmosphere that we want to create.”

The folks at D’Ag’s, as the locals call it, like to give back to the community they feed in a big way. D’Agostino’s is going to build a 200 foot Italian on the Arlington High School football field as part of a fundraiser for FoodLink.

Also located in Arlington, the non-profit rescues food from major grocers and donates to needy families.

The sub will be eaten by town staff, but the donations will feed families and connect the community through food.

“Tuesday, the 8th is when the event is. It’s election day. And that can be a very polarizing day. What we wanted to bring each side, no matter what side of the coin you fall on into a common place to enjoy food, to enjoy drink, to enjoy each other.”

It’s no small task. The deli crew is gonna set it up on the counter and have someone cut the bread, someone cut the cold cuts and someone build the sandwiches and wrap them and deliver them. They’ll work off hours to tackle this huge lunch order, it’s worth it.

You can go to D’Agostino Food Fighters on Venmo and donate.
