Local companies give out 250 turkeys and fixings as cost of Thanksgiving dinner rises 20%

BOSTON — It seems everything costs more these days, and your Thanksgiving dinner is no different.

According to an annual price survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, the cost of a 10-person Thanksgiving dinner will cost 20% more this year than it did in 2021.

To help ease the financial strain, the Sarkis Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate and Mansfield-based NexDine Hospitality are teaming up to provide 250 Thanksgiving meals for Dorchester families.

The turkeys – complete with all the fixings – are being given out at the Dorchester YMCA from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

“As local families continue to battle rising food prices and the rising costs of everyday living, these two companies have combined efforts to provide relief for families struggling with food insecurity this holiday season,” the groups said in a press release. “The families will be given a turkey and all the fixings to put on their table this year.”

The American Farm Bureau Federation found nearly every item on your Thanksgiving menu will cost more this year, including:

· 16-pound turkey: $28.96 or $1.81 per pound (up 21%)

· 14-ounce bag of cubed stuffing mix: $3.88 (up 69%)

· 2 frozen pie crusts: $3.68 (up 26%)

· Half pint of whipping cream: $2.24 (up 26%)

· 1 pound of frozen peas: $1.90 (up 23%)
