Increased security at Curry College Saturday after threatening message targeting Black community

MILTON, Mass. — There will be increased security at Curry College Saturday, after school leaders and police reported a message that targeted the Black community, discovered Tuesday night.

Boston 25 News first found out about the threat thanks to a concerned student who contacted the station.

“[One message] had specific language threatening the Black community and a specific date. That date is Saturday, Feb. 12,” Milton Police Lieutenant Detective Michael Collins said. “There’ll be an increased Milton police presence on the campus for the entire day.”

Collins said that presence would include uniformed and plainclothes police officers.

Police have not released details on what exactly the threat is, but it comes after 20 swastikas were discovered scrawled on walls and doors across campus in the final days of January. The racist message was found on a wall on Feb. 8.

The school sent out a public safety alert to students listing the spots where the swastikas were discovered:

  • Thursday, Jan. 27: North Campus Residence Hall, first-floor laundry room
  • Friday, Jan. 28: Student Center, second-floor men’s restroom stall
  • Friday, Jan. 28: Miller Field House, men’s restroom near the basketball court
  • Sunday, Jan. 30: Student Center, second floor, inside Fitness Center storage cubby
  • Sunday, Jan. 30: Lombard Hall, first-floor hallway & first-floor men’s restroom

“The person or persons responsible for this must be identified, removed from our campus, and brought to justice,” said Curry College President Kenny Quigley. “These disgusting acts of antisemitism and racism will not be tolerated on our campus.”

Campus police told Boston 25 News there are 105 surveillance cameras on campus. They recently added three more, hoping it helps lead them to whoever is responsible for the hateful messages and graffiti.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
