Gas prices having an impact on summer travel

NORWOOD, Mass — We are just days away from the long Memorial Day weekend, but the high gas prices are causing some people to change their plans. Drivers are paying a lot more to fill up this year than last, which has an impact.

According to Gas Buddy’s summer travel survey, 70% of people said their summer travel has been affected by inflation and high gas prices. Despite that, 58% of Americans still plan to take a road trip, which is an increase compared to last summer when gas prices were about a $1.50 less a gallon.

People are making other adjustments too. They are taking only one or two road trips this year. And on those road trips, the Gas Buddy survey found they’ll be making fewer trips inside the convenience store when they fill up, to try and save some money.

The current average for a gallon of gas in Massachusetts is $4.74 a gallon. If you are planning to take a trip to Cape Cod, round trip to Hyannis from just outside the Boston area is about 140 miles. If you’re heading north up to Lake Winnipesaukee, that’s about 250 miles round trip. You can make either trip on a full, 14-gallon tank, which would cost $66.36. Last year, that same trip cost $40.74, as gas was just $2.91 a gallon.

According to Gas Buddy, Memorial Day weekend is the busiest summer holiday travel weekend, followed by Independence Day and then Labor Day weekends.
