Four snowstorms within two weeks have been exhausting for DPW crews

ANDOVER, Mass. — Four snowstorms within the last two weeks have been exhausting for DPW crews, especially in the Merrimack Valley.

“Some of our guys are pretty beaten up you know when you get these back-to-back storms it can wear on the crew pretty quickly,” said Carlos Jaquez, deputy director for Andover’s DPW.

Each storm only brought a few inches of snow, but it’s still a lot of work to treat and plow the roads each time to make sure they’re safe.

“The amount of inches is important to know what you’re fighting, but what’s also equally as important is the duration, when you have inch or two or three inches that last for 24-27 hours, it’s physically as challenging as it is with an 8-inch storm over 10 hours let’s just say – because you still have to be awake, you still have to be managing the storm so that can wear on everybody pretty quickly,” said Jaquez.

The frequency and duration of these storms have been the biggest challenge for crews.

Luckily Wednesday’s snow quickly turned to rain, so the plow crews may finally catch a break with this one.

“We’re hopeful, after a couple of storms in the past few days our guys could use some rest,” said Jaquez.
