DA identifies father, son killed in Mendon crash

MENDON, Mass. — The Worcester County District Attorney’s office has identified the father and son killed in a crash in Mendon Friday night.

Edwin Sosa Acevedo, 34, of Attleboro, and his 15-year-old son, Cristian Sosa, died when their car collided with a truck and went into Lake Nipmuc, the office said.

Investigators say Sosa Acevedo and his son were pulling out of the Alicante Restaurant parking lot at 84 Uxbridge Rd. when their car collided with a Ford F-350 with a three-car carrier trailer attached.

The car went off the roadway, hitting a parked car, and traveled down a 20-foot embankment before becoming submerged in the lake, according to the district attorney.

“I saw divers in the water and I think there were some other people to try to help out initially before first responders got here,” said Ed Shea, who lives next door.

Emergency crews pulled them from the car and attempted lifesaving measures at the scene. They were then taken to Milford Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The driver of the Ford was hospitalized but not seriously injured.

The crash remains under investigation.

Alicante Restaurant & Lounge workers tell Boston 25 they’re also trying to figure out how fast a car would have been going to knock a car leaving the parking lot into the water. Sadly, instead of enjoying a busy Mother’s Day, the tragedy was on all of their minds, as well as some customers’.

“It’s just very sad very tragic,” said customer Donna Hill. “This is one of our favorite places and we were surprised they were even open.

Mother’s Day was the first time the restaurant was open since Friday.

“We’ve been coming here for years, so it’s like a second family but they seem to be okay,” said customer Rima Crepau. “They said it was better for them to be working together to be there today. It’s sad. I’m a mom.”

Workers say this was the son’s first day on the job, making their first day back on the job very challenging.

“I think people who are eating were oblivious, but the people working, it was very sad,” said Hill.
