Competing protests at State House over Roe v. Wade

BOSTON — Dozens rallied outside the State House Sunday, pushing to keep Roe v. Wade in place to protect abortion rights.

The protest got heated at times as counter-protesters voiced their opinions across the street.

“I’m sticking up for those lives that don’t have a voice,” said David Giuggio, with Christ Forgiveness Ministries.

Giuggio says someone from the other side came after him with a bike lock at one point, and that person was then arrested by Boston Police.

Police say the 25-year-old will face assault charges for the incident.

“They tried to hit me in the head with a metal bike lock and this wasn’t the first time they tried to grab my mic, they smashed my speaker,” said Giuggio.

“They have a right to feel the way they feel, but my personal opinion they’re wrong,” said Raena Luciano.

For the most part, the rally remained peaceful, with both sides just wanting to be heard.

“When people want to have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, especially Christians, are being subjected and blocked out of the public square and that’s not fair,” said Giuggio.

“There’s a lot of reasons why people have to access abortion. It is healthcare, it’s also none of your business,” said Iris Mackinnon.

Many here hoping their protests will have an impact on the final decision by the Supreme Court.

“It’s not going to get far it was leaked for a reason and I do believe the person who leaked it knows there’s power in the people, and the people weren’t going to stand for that, and so we’re going to do something about it,” said Mackinnon.
