Cold emergency declared in Boston as frigid air arrives

BOSTON — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has declared a cold emergency in Boston.

The current cold emergency threshold in the city is at least one day of -10 degrees or below observed wind chill.

The Boston 25 Weather Team is tracking dangerous cold and damaging winds for Saturday.

We’re working quickly to make sure all of our residents and families are protected during this weekend’s extremely cold weather,” Wu said in a statement. “I urge all Boston residents to stay warm and safe, and check on your neighbors during this cold emergency.”

With the announcement, all 36 Boston Centers for Youth and Families locations will be activated as warming shelters over the weekend.

The Boston Public Library Central Library in Copley Square will also be used as a warming center.

People are reminded to wear masks inside the shelters. They will also be required to sign in and leave contact information.

Boston police officers patrolling this weekend will be on the lookout for vulnerable people in the streets and will be providing rides to shelters if necessary.

People are encouraged to call 911 if they see a person in distress outside.
