Coastal communities bracing for weekend storm

MARSHFIELD, Mass. — Communities up and down the coast are preparing for a major Nor’easter this weekend.

The storm is expected to bring snow, strong winds and dangerous surf.

People living along the water from the North Shore to the South Shore and Cape Cod are preparing for potential flooding.

“The water will probably be coming right over the seawall onto the road,” one Marshfield woman told Boston 25 News. “I don’t come down here then. We stay away from the water, but it is very pretty.”

Many communities are also preparing for potential beach erosion due to the storm.

In Mashpee, the town is dumping 1,200 tons of sand onto its beach to replenish it before the storm hits.

“The objective was to avoid losing the parking lot,” said Mashpee Town Manager Rodney Collins. “We can’t control Mother Nature, so we adapt to Mother Nature to the best of our ability.”

People who live on the coast are encouraged to prepare for potential power outages, as some of the strongest wind gusts are expected by the water.

“We have a well, so we fill up our bathtub sometimes and just make sure we have some extra water just in case,” one Marshfield woman said. “From what everybody’s saying it’s supposed to be a pretty good storm, but yeah it’s wintertime, it’s what we expect in New England!”
