Boston students return to school

BOSTON — It was back to school in Boston, Thursday. For some students, getting to school was a a little rocky out of the gate.

Liza Heapes says the Charlestown to Boston Latin School bus in Roxbury was a no show for a her 7th grade daughter. “We waited until about 7 and then her friends father took her and some of the other girls to school,” said Heapes.

Marcie Carmody’s 8th grader who attends Boston Latin Academy was also left finding alternate transportation. “Said your son does not have a driver today. It’s the first day of school,” said Carmody.

Boston 25 News reached out to BPS for a statement and received the following:

Getting our students safely to school in the morning and returning them home at the end of the day is central to our mission of making sure every student gets what they need to succeed. We have had a great first day, with 92 percent of our students arriving within 30 minutes of the start of the school day. We will continue working to improve those numbers in the coming days, and to respond to the transportation needs of families throughout the district. We appreciate the commitment of our entire school community in helping us meet the unique challenges we’re facing at the start of the school year, and the partners who have worked with us to give our students a great first day of school.

Parents are hoping to see improvements in the coming days. “Hopefully tomorrow is better,” said Heapes. “You have to get kids in the door. That should be the minimum requirement,” said Carmody.

The MBTA told us their orange shuttles worked as planned helping an estimated 4-thousand BPS students get to school.
