Boston sees big crowds for kickoff to Memorial Day weekend

BOSTON — The crowds have descended on Boston for the unofficial start of the summer season.

Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals at TD Garden Friday night added to the buzz of an already busy Memorial Day weekend.

The rush of visitors extended across many tourist spots in the city.

Many North End restaurants were jam packed with customers all night long Friday, and the buzz was a welcome relief.

“We’re seeing people again and making money and paying pills,” said Claudia Spagnuolo, owner of Spagnuolo’s Restaurant. “Celtics, Memorial Day, people on vacations in the city. I think it’s wonderful.”

Visitors who braved the traffic and the crowds couldn’t help but acknowledge an obvious difference from recent years past.

“It’s like nothing ever happened. It’s strange. You might see one or two people with a mask on, but people just resume their lives very resilient,” said visitor Laurie Medrek.

AAA predicts that Boston traffic will be among the worst in the nation this holiday weekend.

According to AAA, this Memorial weekend will be the busiest in two years, and traffic in major metro areas could experience double the traffic times.
