Boston and beyond: Reactions to SCOTUS draft opinion for and against Roe v. Wade

BOSTON — Loud chants and shouts as protesters gathered outside the State House. Many here are upset that the leaked draft opinion from SCOTUS could lead to a possible overturning of Roe v. Wade.

“I feel like we’re in the 1950s. This is ridiculous. We can’t go back like this,” said a woman protester who declined to give her name.

And similar rallies across the area, including one in Needham outside the First Parish Church. Women here are concerned that if Roe is overturned it could lead to a loss of more rights.

“I think it’s a very dangerous direction to go. I’m very grateful to glad I live in Massachusetts. I’m just concerned this is the start of very important rights being lost,” said Ronnie Haas, of Needham.

As for those who oppose abortion, they are encouraged.

“It really is a landmark moment,” said Dr Kerry Pound. She is a pediatrician and says that medical science clearly shows life begins much earlier than could be proven 40 years ago when Roe became law.

“One - ultrasounds - mind blowing for mothers to see these pictures of their babies from 12 weeks on. That’s proof that this old argument that this is a just a clump of cells goes away immediately,” said Dr. Pound.

And the Catholic Action League, an advocacy group, believes the draft decision will help pro-lifers to rally.

“Many people, including atheists, oppose abortion. People in other faiths oppose abortion. I think it will be a source of encouragement in the Catholic community.” said C.J. Doyle, who is CEO of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts.
