NORTHBORO, Mass. — Bertucci’s, a Northboro-based restaurant chain that offers casual Italian dining, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday for the second time in recent years.
The chain said the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation has resulted in falling sales and rising expenses, leading to an operating loss of $14 million, according to court documents cited by Restaurant Business. The company first sought bankruptcy protection when it was sold in 2018.
In wake of the move, Bertucci’s announced the closure of a number of locations in New England, including five restaurants in Massachusetts. Those locations are Beverly, Brockton, Canton, Marlboro, and North Attleboro, according to the chain.
Employees impacted by the closures were offered positions at locations that still remain open, the chain said.
According to Bertucci’s website, the company currently operates 31 restaurants across Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia.
There are a total of 20 remaining locations in the Bay State.
