Average price for gas in Massachusetts inches closer to $5 a gallon

BOSTON — The average price for gas in Massachusetts is inching close to $5 a gallon, according to new data.

On Monday, the average price for a gallon of gas in the state sat at $4.96, up 23 cents over the last week, according to the American Automobile Association.

The national average cost for a gallon of gas is currently $4.86.

Some of the highest gas prices can be found in northern California, where one gas station is charging $9.60 a gallon.
