2023′s most and least stressed states: Where MA, NH and Maine rank

BOSTON — Massachusetts and New Hampshire rank among the least stressed states in America, according to a new study released Monday by WalletHub.

April is Stress Awareness Month and a whopping 83 percent of U.S. adults are stressed out by inflation, the study found.

The Bay State ranked No. 46 out of the 50 states in terms of stress levels, with No. 1 being the highest stress levels and No. 50 the lowest. The Granite State ranked No. 48.

The coastal state of Maine ranked No. 28, with higher stress levels reported among its residents.

Here are the key rankings for Massachusetts’ metrics, which ultimately led to its overall rank:

  • 45th – in average hours worked per week
  • 32nd – in share of adults getting adequate sleep
  • 48th – in percentage of adults in fair or poor health
  • 46th – in median credit score
  • 42nd – in percentage of population living in poverty
  • 42nd – in divorce rate
  • 44th – in crime rate per capita
  • 50th – in psychologists per capita

The data set ranged from average hours worked per week to the personal bankruptcy rate to the share of adults getting adequate sleep.

The top five least stressed states were Minnesota, Utah, New Hampshire, South Dakota and Massachusetts.

The most stressed states were Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, West Virginia and Nevada.
