16-year-old arrested for shooting man on MBTA platform during evening commute, police say

MBTA Broadway station shooting

BOSTON — Authorities arrested a juvenile accused of shooting a man on a busy MBTA platform last Friday.

Transit Police detectives say they arrested a 16-year-old male at his home on Thursday in connection to the crime. A gun was allegedly recovered at the residence as well.

The teen was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, firearm use in felony, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and unlawful possession of ammunition, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden.

On November 8 at approximately 5:30 p.m., officers responding to a report of a person shot inside Broadway station found a 23-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg on the platform.

He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Surveillance video allegedly shows a group of four males walking down the stairs to the platform and boarding a northbound train while the victim and his friend are seen boarding the train through the same door shortly thereafter. The four males then reportedly exit the train as a southbound train enters the station and the platform fills with passengers.

The victim and his friend are then allegedly seen exiting the train and walking back towards the stairs, behind the four males. One of the males, the 16-year-old suspect, is seen reaching into his waistband and pointing a gun down the platform before running off, according to investigators.

Police say they recovered a flattened, copper-jacketed, hollow-point bullet on the northbound side of the Broadway train platform.

It is unclear if the 16-year-old and the victim knew each other. The other males in the group have not been identified.

The shooting caused the station to be closed for hours and affected Red Line services through most of the night.

A Boston Juvenile Court judge ordered the juvenile suspect held without bail pending a hearing on November 19.

“I thank the Transit police for their strong work so far in this investigation,” Hayden said. “This was a very chaotic scene with multiple station closures and shuttling of passengers.  I am grateful the injuries sustained by the victim are not life-threatening and that no other passengers were hurt.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
